The Varial Story: 23 Years of Independent Hosting

In an industry dominated by giant, faceless conglomerates, Varial Hosting has proudly remained a boutique, independent Canadian provider for over two decades. We don't believe in chatbots, hidden fees or treating our customers like an account number.

To understand why we do things differently, you have to go back to how we started.

Born Out of Necessity (and Loud Music)

Our story begins on June 1, 2003, under our original name: D.I.Y. Web Hosting. Our founder and CEO, Ryan Smith, was playing in a local band and decided to build an online discussion forum dedicated to his city's underground music scene. The website exploded in popularity, quickly racking up millions of hits every month.

To keep his platform online under that massive wave of traffic, Ryan had to fast-track his knowledge in server infrastructure and website optimization. To help subsidize the rapidly climbing server costs, he began selling web hosting to fellow musicians and fans.

Incredibly, some of those original musicians and businesses are still hosting their websites with us today!

Growing Up (and Moving Across from the Skatepark)

By September 2009, the business had grown significantly. We officially rebranded to Varial Hosting to stand out in the crowded hosting market and establish our unique identity in the Canadian tech landscape.

The name "Varial" was born out of a perfect mix of timing and flavour: at the time, we housed our servers in a data center that happened to be located directly across the street from a skatepark, and a "Varial Flip" just happened to be the absolute best trick Ryan could land on a skateboard.

The name stuck, perfectly capturing our agility, independent spirit and willingness to do things a bit differently. In fact, if you look closely at our logo today, the fluid lines are a subtle nod to that very history—representing the motion of a skateboard flipping.

Pivoting to High-Performance & WordPress Expertise

As the web evolved, so did we. For years, we operated as a traditional budget hosting provider. But by February 2016, we noticed a massive shift: the vast majority of our clients were moving away from simple websites and building their brands on WordPress.

With that shift came new challenges for our clients—specifically surrounding optimization, speed bottlenecks and modern security threats. We chose to pivot away from mass-market budget hosting to become true WordPress hosting specialists. To back this mission, we established our current infrastructure within our Saskatoon data center, rebuilding our platform from the ground up with advanced server-level caching and robust web application firewalls to keep our clients' sites lightning-fast and secure.

In June 2026, we took that commitment to total peace of mind a step further by launching our fully managed WordPress Care plan. With this rollout, we evolved to act as a personal webmaster for businesses and organizations who want professional human oversight for their updates, security and performance.
